Apparel MOQ Explained

What minimum order quantities really mean in apparel manufacturing, why they exist, and how to plan your first order around them.

Row of industrial sewing machines

Short answer: MOQ (minimum order quantity) is the smallest number of pieces a manufacturer will produce for one order line. It exists because setup work such as patterns, print preparation, fabric purchasing and machine setup is the same whether you order 10 or 1,000. At Rumbling Fit the MOQ is 10 pieces per design, and sizes can be mixed within a design.

Why manufacturers set MOQs

Every production run has fixed costs:

  • Pattern and marker preparation for cutting
  • Print setup: sublimation files per size, or screens for screen printing
  • Fabric: mills often sell by the roll or set minimums per color
  • Machine setup and line balancing for stitching
  • Admin, QC and packing per order

Spread across 10 pieces, those costs are significant; across 500 they almost disappear. The MOQ is the point where the manufacturer can cover its setup at a price buyers will accept.

Per design, per color or per size?

MOQs are written in different ways, and the difference matters:

MOQ typeMeaningExample: "MOQ 50"
Per orderTotal pieces in the whole order50 pieces across everything
Per styleEach product style50 rash guards in any colors
Per design / colorwayEach style in each color50 blue rash guards, 50 black rash guards
Per sizeEach size of each color50 M blue, 50 L blue…

Always ask which one a manufacturer means. Rumbling Fit's MOQ is 10 pieces per design: one style in one colorway, with sizes mixed as you need.

Fabric and trim minimums

Some materials carry their own minimums. Custom-dyed fabric, jacquard waistband elastic with your logo, or custom zipper pulls often have minimums from the supplier. A manufacturer should tell you about these in the quote. Using standard fabrics and trims keeps the garment MOQ low.

How MOQ affects price

Unit price falls as quantity rises, steeply at first and then more slowly. A typical pattern:

Pieces per designRelative unit cost
10Highest
50Noticeably lower
100Lower again
300+Close to the floor

Ask for quotes at several breaks so you can choose where risk and cost balance.

Planning around MOQ

  • Fewer designs, more depth: three designs at 30 pieces beat ten designs at 10.
  • Share fabric across designs to avoid separate fabric minimums.
  • Limit sizes on a first run: S–XL instead of XS–3XL.
  • Use sublimation for multi-color art in small runs; it needs no screens.

Can MOQs be negotiated?

Sometimes, but low MOQs usually mean higher unit prices. Rather than pushing a factory below its minimum, look for one whose minimum fits your plan. Read small-batch vs bulk production for a deeper comparison.
