How flatlock seams are made, the different types, and how to check them in a sample.
Short answer: A flatlock seam butts two fabric edges together and covers them with interlocking stitches on both sides, creating a flat, stretchy seam with no inner ridge. Performance rash guards usually use a 4-needle 6-thread flatlock. It prevents chafing and stretches with the fabric.
A flatlock machine trims the fabric edges, lays them edge-to-edge (or with a very slight overlap), and sews needle threads through both while looper and cover threads interlock across the top and bottom. The result looks like a wide band of parallel stitches.
| Type | Look | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 2-needle 3/4-thread | Narrow | Light activewear |
| 3-needle 5-thread | Medium | Activewear, underwear |
| 4-needle 6-thread | Wide, strong | Rash guards, compression, performance |
