Rash Guard vs Compression Shirt

They look alike but are built for different jobs. Here's how to tell them apart and which to make or buy.

Short answer: A rash guard is built for contact sports: tougher fabric, grip hem, flatlock seams and designs meant to survive grappling. A compression shirt is a base layer for training: often lighter, with stronger compression and ventilation. For BJJ and no-gi, choose a rash guard; for gym and running, a compression shirt.
